2012 Spring Training Camp

063We are getting ready for our 2012 Twin Cities Spoke Spring Training Camp. Just like last year, we will be heading to southwestern Wisconsin and riding through the scenic and challenging River Bluffs.  Whether you are a seasoned racer and have a full summer of racing in front of you or racing isn't your bag but you are planning to do charity rides and long tours [century rides], this is the perfect way to kick-start your season.  It is not a super-exotic destination, but it is fairly close to home [only about a 4 hour drive] and we get mid April weather in March.  The roads have been terrific, the traffic light [almost non-existent], the accommodations fabulous and the fellowship phenomenal.

COST WILL ONLY BE $150

Feel free to invite a friend or two, since the more people we get the more enjoyable the camp and the more affordable we cans set the price.  If you are thinking of joining us but not ready to commit by registering, please let us know by posting on our forum or contacting Joel so that we have an idea of who to expect when we price the weekend.

More details will be posted soon, but here is an idea of what to expect, based on last year:

  • We will leave the morning of Thursday, March 22nd and head to Ferryville. Those coming from the Twin Cities, we meet at Wooddale and carpool from there. It sounds like we may have more than just AW coming from Rochester, so we may or may not be swinging over to pick him up on the way.
  • Get to the cabins early Thursday afternoon, unload the cars, gear up and go for a ride.
  • Every morning after breakfast we will hold an optional Bible study and get into the Word.
  • Friday & Saturday will see us ride from late morning to late afternoon or early evening [may depend on weather] with supper and fellowship or a movie in the evening.
  • Sunday morning we will do a shortened ride late morning, then pack & check-out to be home to the Twin Cities by early evening.
  • We rent three large cabins [see links below] that can comfortably sleep up to about 10 people each. If we get more than that, we may ask some to bring sleeping bags and air mattresses.
  • We will provide a hearty breakfast and supper with lunch being taken on the road -- usually consisting of Hammer Bars or some other easy to pack food items.
  • We are planning at least two different groups of riders -- a race team ride [20+ mph] and a performance-oriented recreational ride [16 - 20mph].  Depending on who registers and how many people we get, it could be more groups.
  • A list of what to bring will be listed soon

On a personal note, this trip has been a highlight of my last two seasons and is about the most fun you can have on a bike without pinning on a number. Even if you can't make the full camp and can only come for the weekend [after work on Friday], this is close enough to come and enjoy a couple of great rides.  The roads have been in great shape and the weather, although a little cool, has been very ride-able.

COST WILL ONLY BE $150

UPDATE: This just in -- our sources have confirmed that a mechanic from Tonka Cycle & Ski will be along on the trip to help with any emergency repairs and maybe even give a bike maintenence seminar!  Talk about great support from our sponsor -- this is very cool. Thank you Tonka Cycle & Ski!!

Grrrlz Night at TNT

You have heard the rumors. You have read hints on BikeThrowDotCom.com's Facebook page. Well, now it is official: June 7th will be Grrrlz Night at TNT. Not only do we have special Grrrl prizes, but we will do Grrrlz Frrrst. Since start order is determined by order of registration/check-in the Grrrlz will be allowed to check in at 6:00, but the men will have to wait until 6:15. Thus, the first wave will be all Grrrlz! We will then remove four numbers so they have a two minute head start. This will be a Prrrfect first race for all of the Grrrlz who want to start racing.

And it is on PARTY NIGHT, so after the race there is free food [for everyone -- even da boyz] and a raffle for a set of racing wheels. I can't imagine ANYONE missing this event.

2011 Race Rules

Tuesday Night Time Trials (TNT) is an eight-race Time Trial series. Points are awarded each race based on the individuals finishing time relative to the winning time. Series winners are determined for the general categories of “open”, “stock” bike, team, and age group.

 Race Categories:

There are five different ways to win prizes at 2011 TNT:

  1. “Open” category

  2. “Stock” bike category

  3. Age group category

  4. Team Time Trial

  5. General raffles

 Category selection:

You must declare either “open” or “stock” bike category. You can change categories mid-series, but your points only count in which category they were won. (eg: say you win two races TT and win two races “stock”. You have 200 points in the “open” category and 200 points in the “stock” category). You can race each race twice (once in each category) if you wish, but it is considered two race entries (with applicable two entry fees).

Regardless of your bike category, everyone is entered in the age group competition. Yes, we know this skews the age group winners to those with TT bikes, but this is a TT after all.

1) “Open” Racing Individual Time Trial (ITT)

This is the basic race category if you ride a Time Trial (TT) bike. Because this is not a USAC or USAT sanctioned race, we are not posting strict rules on fame geometry, rider position (ie: the Floyd Landis “praying mantis” position that is now USAC banned). However, you know what a TT bike is and is not, and we reserve the right to deem something a TT bike. So if you put aero bars on your road bike, you are racing “Open”.

2) “Stock” Bike Individual Time Trial (ITT)

A “stock” bike is your road bike. Again, we are not going to be strict on regulations, but we reserve the right to deem you “open” or “stock” if you try to inappropriately enter the wrong category. One aspect on wheels is worthy of noting: we will allow aero rims like 38 or 58 mm carbon fairings. There are pretty common and you can use them in lots of races. Besides, you spent a lot of money on those deep dish rims and we want this race to be fun, so you can use them if you have them.

 3) Age group

Age groups are split up by decade:

  • Under 20
  • 20-29
  • 30-39
  • 40-49
  • 50-59
  • 60+

We will follow ABR guidelines (since they insure us, after all) and your race age is your age at the end of 2011. (ok, this is the same as other organizations too).

4) Team Time Trial (TTT)

A “Team” is a group of 3-5 riders working together to increase the overall TT speed. While drafting is illegal in the Individual Time Trial, it is legal, and the key to a successful TTT. Bike type is not considered for a team.

5) General Raffles

Many of us have never actually won a race, but who’s to say you can’t still win something? We have three main raffles anchoring our series this year:

Raffle 1: ROL Wheels: 1 set (front & rear) of Volant clinchers. Week 3, 6/7/2011

Raffle 2: ROL Wheels: 1 set (front & rear) of Volant clinchers. Week 6, 7/19/2011

Raffle 3: Leopard Cycles TT1 Time Trial frame/fork/headset*. Week 8, 8/16/2011

We may add additional raffle prizes if/as we get sponsor support so stay aware!

* Due to the Leopard Cycles sponsorship of Alexi Grewal and his racing comeback and product availability, the TT1 frame is a 55cm size.  If you win it and it doesn't fit you, Leopard Cycles has agreed to offer a credit towards a different frame of your choice in their product line.  They can help you select a frame and outfit it with components.  Additional cost over the awarded value is the responsibility of the award winner.

You get one raffle entry for each paid race entry. If you won a free race from last year, we’ll count those as valid entries. If you register for a half-series pass, you get one additional entry (total of 5 raffle entries). If you register for a full-series pass, you get two additional entries (total of 10 raffle entries).

Raffles are entered into the drawing per the following manner:

  • Each night you are eligible for a valid entry (eg: a paid entry), that entry is entered into the raffle.

  • When you register for the half or full series, the additional entries are entered the first week

  • When you register for the full series, each week you get one additional raffle entry entered

  • When you register for the half series, each race you attend you get one raffle entry

  • If you pay entry for both “open” and “stock” in one night, you receive two raffle entries.

  • Each member of a TTT receives one raffle entry

 Raffle entry and eligibility

Entry: Entries accumulate over the series. If your name is not drawn it remains in the eligible pool until the next raffle. Here is an example:

You register for a full-series pass. For the week 3 raffle you have accumulated 5 entries. Two as the additional raffles and three for the week 1-3 entries. If you don’t win the raffle those entries remain in the pool. On week six you have eight entries (5 + week 4-6 entries).

 Eligibility:

  • You must be present to win and collect the prize.

  • You do not have to race the day of the raffle. (but you do have to be present to win)

  • If your name is drawn and you are not present, a new name is drawn.

  • If your name is drawn and you are not present, your name goes back into the pool for the next raffle.

  • If you win a raffle you are ineligible for the following raffles

  • If you win a raffle you cannot request to forfeit your prize for a chance at future raffles.

 Series Prizes and Eligibility

TNT is a series points race. Prizes are awarded for the following categories:

  • Top five places “open”, male

  • Top five places “open”, female

  • Top five places “stock”, male

  • Top five place “stock”, female

  • First place, each age group, male

  • First place, each age group, female

You are eligible to win only one category. There is a priority order of winning:

  • Overall “open”

  • Overall “stock”

  • Age group

What this means is you can only win one series prize even if you are entered in two or all categories. Eg: You win a top 5 place “open” and your age group. You are awarded the “open” prize.

Ex: You win a top 5 place “open” and “stock”. You are awarded the “open” prize.

If you win multiple prize placings and one is forfeited, the next eligible participant is awarded the prize.

There are a total of 34 prizes awarded.

There are no nightly place prizes.

Prize specifics are detailed in the published prize list.

Twin Cities Spoke retains the right to change the prize list at any time, for any reason.

Individual participants are required to participate in a minimum of 5 events for prize eligibility.

Teams are required to participate in both Team Time Trials for prize eligibility.

Series awards do not influence raffle prizes. Eg: you are not excluded from the raffle if you win a series prize.

Disqualification

TNT is run on an open road with live traffic. The racer holds responsibility for personal safety, and this includes following legal traffic rules. The following is considered grounds for race disqualification:

  • The “Yellow Line” rule: If you cross the yellow line, you are DQ’d (and it’s illegal anyway)

  • Drafting off of another person

  • Drafting off of a vehicle or swinging wide after they pass to catch the wake.

  • Profanity that results in complaints to TNT staff

  • General safety complaints brought to the attention of TNT staff

  • Disrespecting our host property. This means the Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Community property and the city of Medina.

  • General respect: If you jeopardize the viability of our race because your actions are offensive to our hosts, the general public, or residential neighbors we will DQ you and potentially request you to not return.

In general, there have been few incidents in the history of TNT. You know how to be respectful and how to race. Don’t make us have to tell you how to act.

 Race Scoring

Race points: Points are awarded to every individual cyclist who completes the TT. 100pts is given to the fastest time for each of the 8 series races with all other cyclists receiving a percentage of 100pt based on the variance of their time to the winning time.

Bonus Points: Riders will receive a maximum of 10 bonus pts. 5 bonus pts each for the 6th and 7th race they finish.

Example:

Individual Pts:

Winning time: 25:00:00 = 100pts

Cyclist 2 time: 28:00:00 = 89pts ((25/28)*100)

Cyclist 3 time: 35:00:00 = 71pts ((25/35)*100)

Team Pts: These are calculated using the time of third team cyclist to cross the finish line. Team points are awarded with the same scoring format as the individual competition.

Lastly:

TNT is an amateur race series that is hosted to provide local fun, fellowship, and some competition. We work hard to make sure our rules are fair and thorough, but there is always the potential to miss a detail. We apologize if this happens, but the Twin Cities Spoke reserves the right to alter these rules and awards as we see fit.
